We’ve heard of celebrities doing ridiculous diets that include maple syrup, purple foods and baby food – but now there’s one that involves drinking clay. Actual clay made from volcanic ash – yikes. Both Zoe Kravitz and Shailene Woodley have admitted using the clay cleanse, with Zoe using it to lose weight for a film role that saw her portraying an anorexic and bulimic – she reportedly lost 20lbs. She told Us Weekly: ‘I ended up drinking clay because it cleans out your body and fills you up. I was eating like a Mason jar of pureed vegetables a day and running.’

Does clay have cleansing abilities that help remove toxins? Yes. But usually clay is used as a face mask to remove skin impurities, or used in a culinary context to eliminate toxicants in food sources.

This wacky trend was brought to the spotlight by actress Shailene Woodley, who described clay as “one of the best things you can put into your body,”. But other than that hype, there is no substantial evidence that clays remove toxins, or that they should be consumed as a purifying measure. Crickets have already found their way into plenty of popular foods: protein bars, dried as a snack (similar to dried fruit), flour, chips, and cookies.

That’s right, protein derived from creepy, crawly, and even winged creatures is generating buzz among the health obsessed as the new go-to food for fueling your workouts and staying fit and lean.

“When it comes to bugs, the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization has identified almost 2,000 types of edible insect species,” says Vandana Sheth, RDN, CDE, and spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. In fact, in 2013 the UN released a report arguing that insects are a viable — and highly nutritious food source, rich in protein, fiber, vitamins, minerals and healthy fats.

3. The Blood-Type Diet

Researchers from the University of Toronto discovered the theory behind the blood-type diet, which claims an individual’s nutritional needs depends on their blood type, is unfounded and invalid.

Popularized by the popular book Eat Right For Your Type, the theory maintained that one’s blood type can improve health and lower the risk of chronic illnesses like cardiovascular disease. These researchers shut the notion down, saying someone’s ability to respond favorably to a diet depends on his or her ability to stay on the diet, not on their type of blood.

In Eat Right For Your Type Dr D’Admao matches the blood type to dietary recommendations, summarised here.

•The O diet Eat meat (high protein, low carbohydrate). Cut out wheat and most other grains. Engage in vigorous aerobic exercise. Your risk factors for ulcers and inflammatory diseases such as arthritis increase if you eat incorrectly for your type.

•The A diet You should be largely vegetarian (eating a high carbohydrate, low fat diet). Engage in gentle exercise such as yoga or golf and meditate to deal with stress. Your risk factors for cancer and heart disease increase if you eat incorrectly, according to Dr D’Admao.

•The B diet You should have the most varied diet of all the blood types, one including meat; yours is the only blood type that does well with dairy products. Engage in exercise such as moderate swimming or walking. Your risk for slow-growing viruses that attack the nervous system increases if you eat incorrectly for your type.

•The AB diet You have most of the benefits and intolerances of types A and B, so most foods which are recommended for either type A or B will also work for you. Engage in calming exercises and relaxation techniques. You have the friendliest immune system.

In the UK 46 per cent of people have O type blood, 42 per cent A, nine per cent B and three per cent A/B.

Now this one is very controversial in my house as my husband, Jamie, swears by them!!! Bulletproof Coffee, recently back int he news, is a caffeinated concoction. Not your typical cup of coffee, it’s brewed with two-thirds of a stick of grass-fed butter. Let’s be clear; grass-fed butter is still butter, whether it comes from cows, sheep, goats, or yaks, it’s still adding 100 to 200 calories to your coffee.

The beverage is said to boost energy, shrink your waistline, and promote brain function, however a report in the Daily Mail says “any extra energy experienced by drinkers is merely a placebo effect,”.

Butter is high in saturated fat, which raises cholesterol and increases your risk of heart disease and stroke. But those who follow the Paleo diet will likely be fans of the coffee since it falls within their hat-fat regimen.

 

5. Charcoal Cleanse

Plan your weekly food, shop and try to stay on plan, make a list and stick to it. Skipping breakfast can actually backfire on you, and cause you to gain weight. When you don’t eat a meal in the morning after going several hours without eating overnight, you may starving by mid-morning, and eat whatever is on hand, such as the sugary doughnuts in the break room. Even if you make it to lunch without caving to an unhealthy snack, you may be so hungry that you make poor food choices and eat more calories for lunch than you normally would. Not only can these extra calories can derail your weight loss efforts, but going without food increases the production of insulin in your body, which can cause your body to store more fat.

KEEP A DIARY – This can really show you in black and white exactly what you are taking in over the week.  Sometimes we kid ourselves and forget to add that chocolate bar or glass of wine if we’re totting it all up in our head. Keeping a food journal can be a real eye opener that will help you stay on track. It doesn’t have to be just for food you could record your exercise schedule. Record everything you eat and drink immediately. Note what you’re doing while you’re eating―driving, watching TV, etc. Describe how you felt while you ate: angry, sad, happy, nervous, starving, bored?  Be honest. It’s a journal, not a newsletter, and no one has to see it but you. At the end of each day, examine how your emotions affected your eating.

START A WEEKLY HABIT.  Rememember back at New Year when we all swore we would exercise more, stop smoking etc etc the same old New Year resolutions that normally fizzle out by early January! The reason for those resolutions never lasting that long is simply because they can be too daunting. If we set our selves weekly or even monthly targets and goals its much more achievable. You can make amazing changes by making small adjustments in your habits, for example if you make it your goal not to have chocolate in the afternoon or after your training session then this is much easier then banning chocolate from your diet altogether and your more likely to stick to it.

BE MORE ACTIVE – Again an oldie but a goldie!!! its not rocket science! It doesn’t have to be much, just swap two stops on the train or bus for a brisk walk at the end or beginning of your journey.  Or park your car a few roads from your house – just make sure you remember that you’ve done it incase you think its been stolen the next day!  Basically whatever your fitness level, even a complete beginner can incorporate exercise into their daily commute or shopping trip.

Stand up at work. Recent studies reveal that sitting for long periods of time can have a negative effect on overall health and lifespan. If you work somewhere you generally sit for many hours a day, consider working at a standing-desk, or just standing up and doing your work whenever possible. If it doesn’t require that you sit, stand up and use your legs. You’ll likely notice a difference in your energy levels and feel better at the end of the day, rather than more tired.

The alkaline diet, the blood type diet, the upside down diet ( that one’s not real ) we are bombarded by fad diets and quick fix’s.  The cabbage diet works if you want to be unrealistic and suddenly lose a stone- but then what? FIND A GYM BUDDY

If you can encourage a friend tot be your gym buddy and make fitness more sociable you’ll make it so much easier to keep to. If you suddenly join a gym and set yourself up to go four times a week, to be honest if this isn’t the norm for you, you’re just setting yourself up to let yourself down.  Gradually build your progress even for instance attending twice a week for the first month and then three times for the second and so on. Set your self small goals on a short timespan you will feel amazing as you achieve them and gain fitness and confidence.  You will see improvements in all areas, endurance, strength and speed.  Achievable goals are the way forward.

GET A PERSONAL TRAINER

Stuck in a rut? Don’t know where to start?  Don’t know your kettle bells from your TRX’s. Invest in yourself, by hiring a personal trainer to inspire you and encourage you.  Getting a personal trainer will not only give you drive but will push you to keep going.They will be able to offer you new ideas and concepts.  They can set you goals and really motivate you.   Remember, a personal trainer has to be someone you enjoy and look up to – they don’t need to be your best friend but they do need to take control and educate you.  If you have a session that you don’t enjoy – be bold, explain tho the PT what you felt wasn’t right and either give them a chance to listen more to your individual needs or MOVE ON with another trainer.

BREAKFAST LIKE A KING!!!! And other useful tips….

We know how important it is to feel the best you can especially with summer in sight.  Here are some tips and rules for you to incorporate into your everyday regime……

 

1. Don’t skip breakfast!

Theres an old saying that says “BREAKFAST LIKE A KING, LUNCH LIKE A PRINCE, DINE LIKE A PAUPER”  This ancient proverb has more than a grain of truth in it, but sadly, most people leading today’s busy lives skip breakfast altogether. This is really bad news as ideally you should be getting about a quater of your day’s calories from breakfast, enough to keep you going right through till lunchtime, both physically and mentally. Starting the day without refuelling your body’s engine means poor concentration, irritability, low blood sugar and a dreadful craving for the biscuit tin or chocolate bar in the middle of the morning.eggs breakfast

A staggering five million people don’t bother to eat breakfast at home but grab a snack while dashing to work. They consume one and a half million bacon sandwiches, over a million packets of crisps, and three-quarters of a million ham sandwiches and more than a million sugary soft drinks. But worse still, half the working population skip breakfast altogether and another half a million grab a bag of sweets or bar of chocolate on their way.

Breakfast is exactly what it says, breaking your fast, and for most people the time they spend in bed is the longest period they go without food. When you get up in the morning it may easily be 8 – 12 hours since you last ate and your blood sugar level is at rock bottom. In order for your brain to function properly it needs a constant supply of sugar which is why starting your day with breakfast is so important. Skipping breakfast means poorer performance by schoolchildren, a greater risk of accidents when driving, and a lack of efficiency and concentration at work.

And just to prove the point, a study published last year showed that people who ate breakfast were definitely happier than those who didn’t.

2.Eat Every Three Hours
Eating small meals every three hours promises to get rid of stubborn belly fat without giving up your favorite foods or having to commit to a full-fledged exercise program. In fact, exercise is optional with this program. The 3-Hour Diet promises that within just two weeks of following  it, your levels of the stress hormone cortisol (which is said to cause belly fat) will be reduced, and so will your waistline.

kingIts not unusual to drop 10 pounds during the first two weeks and then lose additional weight every week after that. The diet promotes itself as one that addresses both the physical and psychological aspects of weight loss. It also claims to be easy enough to follow that you will be able to stick with it until you reach your goals.

Here is an example of how your day may look:

eat breakfast at 7 a.m.
have a snack at 10 a.m.
eat lunch at 1 p.m.
have a second snack at 4 p.m.
eat dinner at 7 p.m.

To follow the diet correctly, dieters must make sure they stop eating at least three hours before going to sleep.

This diet is based on the belief that if you go for more than three hours without putting food in your body, it goes into “starvation mode.” In other words, your body stores fat and burns muscle, slowing down your metabolism as if preparing for a period of hunger. Eating consistently will keep your metabolism moving quickly, helping you burn fat all day.

There are no banned foods as such.  When following the plan many people choose to weigh there food or choose simple healthy/clean options.

3. Reduce added sugar

Sugar Is The Devil!!!! seems to be the catchphrase of the moment. Every celebrity chef in the universe has brought out a book showing how us just how much better our food can taste WITHOUT adding sugar.  AND they are not wrong!!!! The effect of added sugar on us as a nation is becoming blatantly obvious.  Swap refined carbohydrates such as white bread rice and pasta for wholegrain alternatives that real ease energy more slowly.

4.Eat Essential Fats

Another turnaround in the industry, which often confuses us with conflicting information is that we are relying on low-fat products and in doing so could mean we are deficient in “good” essential fatty acids, found in oily fish, nuts and seeds.  These fatty acids help to boost your metabolism so should form part of your diet.

5. Add Protein to each Meal

chickenProtein from meat, fish, eggs and pulses slows down the rate that your stomach processes food and delays the passage of carbohydrates as well.  as soon as you add a protein to a carbohydrate you change it into a slower releasing carb that keeps your sugar levels stable

Lean meats, such as chicken, fish, and lean beef are potent sources of protein: three ounces can offer as much as 22-26 grams. They also have a minimal amount of fat compared to steak, ground beef and other heavily fatty meats. Even eggs can work as a potent source of protein, though you shouldn’t eat more than four whole eggs a week. If you’re crazy about eggs, try eating just egg whites or fewer yolks.

6. Dont Count Calories

Calorie-conciousness shifts emphasis from how you eat to how much you eat. Counting calories ultimately prevents a harmonious relationship with food. Instead of welcoming food as life-giving nourishment, calorie counting produces apprehension of food.

In the same way, calorie-counting de-personalizes one’s relationship with food. A common practice is determine one’s ideal daily calories or even calories burned while exercising. Sadly, that creates a mechanical, stressful relationship with food. It is also very easy to make completely wrong calculations – so why bother!!!

Weight loss begins with whole, nourishing foods prepared at home. It means eating mindfully, chewing food slowly, repeating the food we eat.  Don’t sit eating your meal with your telephone or iPad in one hand, concentrate and enjoy the lovely breakfast/lunch or dinner that you have prepared.

7. Watch What You Drink

Ive left the toughest one to last – ALCOHOL and sugary drinks!!!!  Cut out all sugary drinks and significantly reduce your caffeine and alcohol intake, that includes all coffees and energy drinks.  If you just can’t live without your morning tea or espresso make sure you don’t drink it on an empty stomach as caffeine gets straight into your bloodstream and triggers cortisol release.  If the release of cortisol is too much it can be linked to excess belly fat!!!
