In an ideal world nobody would need colonic therapy…Just imagine for a minute…If we woke in the morning in a tropical paradise, gently aroused by little birds tweeting in the blue sky , got out of bed after a dream filled sleep and made our way to our private beach, feeling the soft sand beneath our toes and ate breakfast of local berries and fruit. 1. Clay Cleanse

We’ve heard of celebrities doing ridiculous diets that include maple syrup, purple foods and baby food – but now there’s one that involves drinking clay. Actual clay made from volcanic ash – yikes. Both Zoe Kravitz and Shailene Woodley have admitted using the clay cleanse, with Zoe using it to lose weight for a film role that saw her portraying an anorexic and bulimic – she reportedly lost 20lbs. She told Us Weekly: ‘I ended up drinking clay because it cleans out your body and fills you up. I was eating like a Mason jar of pureed vegetables a day and running.’

Does clay have cleansing abilities that help remove toxins? Yes. But usually clay is used as a face mask to remove skin impurities, or used in a culinary context to eliminate toxicants in food sources.

This wacky trend was brought to the spotlight by actress Shailene Woodley, who described clay as “one of the best things you can put into your body,”. But other than that hype, there is no substantial evidence that clays remove toxins, or that they should be consumed as a purifying measure. There are far better ways to get minerals, and besides, our liver and kidneys do a pretty good job detoxifying our bodies without mud. Let them do their job.

This one just screams…Im  A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here!!! Okay, this may not be damaging to your health, but it’s certainly strange and may take some getting used to before they become mainstream. Crickets have already found their way into plenty of popular foods: protein bars, dried as a snack (similar to dried fruit), flour, chips, and cookies.

That’s right, protein derived from creepy, crawly, and even winged creatures is generating buzz among the health obsessed as the new go-to food for fueling your workouts and staying fit and lean.

“When it comes to bugs, the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization has identified almost 2,000 types of edible insect species,” says Vandana Sheth, RDN, CDE, and spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. In fact, in 2013 the UN released a report arguing that insects are a viable — and highly nutritious food source, rich in protein, fiber, vitamins, minerals and healthy fats.

Beyond that, eating insects might be good for the environment, offering an easy, cheap way to feed people worldwide as the planet’s population steadily climbs towards the nine billion mark.

3. The Blood-Type Diet

Researchers from the University of Toronto discovered the theory behind the blood-type diet, which claims an individual’s nutritional needs depends on their blood type, is unfounded and invalid.

Popularized by the popular book Eat Right For Your Type, the theory maintained that one’s blood type can improve health and lower the risk of chronic illnesses like cardiovascular disease. These researchers shut the notion down, saying someone’s ability to respond favorably to a diet depends on his or her ability to stay on the diet, not on their type of blood.

In Eat Right For Your Type Dr D’Admao matches the blood type to dietary recommendations, summarised here.

•The O diet Eat meat (high protein, low carbohydrate). Cut out wheat and most other grains. Engage in vigorous aerobic exercise. Your risk factors for ulcers and inflammatory diseases such as arthritis increase if you eat incorrectly for your type.

•The A diet You should be largely vegetarian (eating a high carbohydrate, low fat diet). Engage in gentle exercise such as yoga or golf and meditate to deal with stress. Your risk factors for cancer and heart disease increase if you eat incorrectly, according to Dr D’Admao.

•The B diet You should have the most varied diet of all the blood types, one including meat; yours is the only blood type that does well with dairy products. Engage in exercise such as moderate swimming or walking. Your risk for slow-growing viruses that attack the nervous system increases if you eat incorrectly for your type.

•The AB diet You have most of the benefits and intolerances of types A and B, so most foods which are recommended for either type A or B will also work for you. Engage in calming exercises and relaxation techniques. You have the friendliest immune system.

In the UK 46 per cent of people have O type blood, 42 per cent A, nine per cent B and three per cent A/B.

Now this one is very controversial in my house as my husband, Jamie, swears by them!!! Bulletproof Coffee, recently back int he news, is a caffeinated concoction. Not your typical cup of coffee, it’s brewed with two-thirds of a stick of grass-fed butter. Let’s be clear; grass-fed butter is still butter, whether it comes from cows, sheep, goats, or yaks, it’s still adding 100 to 200 calories to your coffee.

The beverage is said to boost energy, shrink your waistline, and promote brain function, however a report in the Daily Mail says “any extra energy experienced by drinkers is merely a placebo effect,”.

Butter is high in saturated fat, which raises cholesterol and increases your risk of heart disease and stroke. But those who follow the Paleo diet will likely be fans of the coffee since it falls within their hat-fat regimen.

 

5. Charcoal Cleanse

Hospitals use a special charcoal cocktail to flush poison and alcohol out of patients’ systems. In 2014, normal people decided the black mess at the bottom of their grill would work great as a cleansing agent.

Apple Cider Vinegar – Who knew??

 


 

Here at The Cleanse, colonic hydrotherapy,  we love to share with you all any current trends in health, lifestyle and all things digestion!!! Heres our most recent discovery……

You know what they say: A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down. Or is it a spoonful of vinegar helps celebrities stay fit?

Stars like Miranda Kerr and Megan Fox have been vocal about their love of apple cider vinegar for years now, and this trend isn’t going away. Back in 2010 Megan Fox said, “It just cleanses out your system entirely.”

And then there’s Miranda, who likes to drizzle it on her salad. She told Vogue Australia this month that she always makes “a big salad with finely chopped fennel, cucumber, feta cheese, baby spinach, avocado…and a dressing of macadamia oil, apple cider vinegar and Bragg’s amino acids.”

That actually sounds delicious, except for the amino acids part! Miranda also mentions that she uses the potent stuff for shiny hair. “You put on a little bit on in the shower as a rinse, and then wash it out. It stinks a little bit, but then you use conditioner and the smell goes away,” she said.

Apple cider vinegar is OUR new obsession too!

I recently began taking ACV shots a few times a day for a quick and effective energy burst. However, I’ve since discovered so many other useful ways to incorporate ACV into my daily routine.

It’s effective for pretty much anything — your skin, your hair, your house, and even your pets can benefit from its qualities. Raw, organic, unfiltered, and unpasteurized, ACV is so much more than a salad dressing!

1. ACV can detoxify your home.

It’s made from apple juice and is fermented to hard apple cider. It’s then fermented a second time to become apple cider vinegar. By using ACV in lieu of other products, we instantly decrease the consumption of unnatural chemicals in our homes and daily lives.

2. It can make your hair shine.

Apple cider vinegar can be used as a rinse for your hair after shampooing, and it will boost your hair’s body and shine. I recommend recycling an old shampoo bottle, then filling it with ½ tablespoon of ACV and 1 cup of cold water. Pour the solution through your hair after shampooing. Do this several times a week for dramatic results.

3. Natural ACV regulates the pH of your skin.

Dilute ACV with two parts water, and spread the concoction over your face with a cotton ball to replace your current toner. You can do this at night after washing, and in the morning before you apply your moisturizer. A dab of ACV can also be left on the skin overnight to fade age spots or acne scars.

It’s also a recommended agent for warts. For warts, soak a cotton ball in ACV, then fasten the cotton ball over the wart with a Band-Aid overnight. The skin may swell some as it reacts with the solution. However, the wart will fall off. Once it falls off, the treatment should be continued for a few more days, to make sure the wart doesn’t return.

4. It can remove stains from teeth.

Rub teeth directly with apple cider vinegar, and rinse with water.

5. It can soothe sunburned skin.

Add 1 cup of apple cider vinegar to your bath, and soak for 10 minutes to eliminate discomfort from sunburn.

6. ACV can be used as a natural aftershave.

Fill a bottle with equal parts apple cider vinegar and water, and shake before applying to the face.

7. It’s an all-natural massage treatment.

Rubbing apple cider vinegar on your hands and feet will give massage-like benefits and relief to tired hands and feet.

8. ACV can aid in weight loss.

For daily weight management, add 2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar to 16 ounces of water. This concoction can be sipped throughout the day.

9. ACV will balance your entire inner body system.

Apples also contain pectin, which is an insoluble fiber found in many fruits and other plant species. As a fiber, pectin contains the health benefits of other types of fiber and also acts as a prebiotic. Prebiotics are non-digestible foods that encourage a healthy gut by supporting the growth of probiotic bacteria.

Apple cider vinegar detox

The liver and kidneys are both major elimination organs and it’s important to support them while they work to process toxins from foods, medications, and the environment. The liver works to clean the blood and transforms toxins and chemicals so we can excrete them. The kidneys follow the liver and flush those toxins out of the body through the urine. Does apple cider vinegar actually help reduce heartburn?

Much of the time, acid reflux is not directly caused by stomach over-acidity, instead it is caused by acid that is supposed to be in the stomach backing up into the esophagus where it causes a burning sensation. Acid is essential when is comes to keeping the valve at the end of the esophagus shut. When this valve stays shut during digestion, it keeps the acid in the stomach where it belongs and where it can do its job of helping with digestion and the absorption of key minerals.

Hydrochloric acid (HCl), the type of acid in your stomach, is essential for your gut health. It helps break down everything you ingest, it keeps your stomach at the right pH for digestive enzymes to work, and it helps attack harmful bacteria that might get into your GI tract.

1. Apanasana

Apanasana, knees hugged to belly, is known as the “wind-relieving pose.” Hugging the right knee into the belly massages the ascending colon, while hugging the left knee in massages the descending colon. Try this simple pose for improved digestion:

Come to lie on the back. Settle into your yoga mat or wherever you are. Place your feet to the floor, directly beneath the knees. On an inhale, take your hands to your knees. On an exhale, hug the knees comfortably to the belly. Only hug in a comfortable amount. Stay here for 5-10 full breaths.

(Optional: follow with hugging one knee in at a time, first the right and then the left).

2. Twists

We’ve all heard yoga teachers say, “Twisting aids digestion.” It used to go in one ear and out the other, until my own yoga teacher training. Compressing the colon in specific ways (right to left) can really aid in digestion. Detoxifying twists can stimulate the movement of those toxins that accumulate in the body and help usher them out.

Move from apanasana into a simple spinal twist. Hug the knees in gently and take an inhale. On the exhale, drop the knees to the left, compressing the right side of the body. Turn the head to the right for a nice neck stretch. Stay for at 5-10 full breaths. On an inhale return the knees to center and repeat on the other side.

3. Balasana

Balasana, Child’s Pose, compresses the abdomen and massages the internal organs. Similar to apanasana, this pose stimulates the digestive system.

From lying on your back, hug the knees in once more. Roll to your right side, using the right arm as a pillow for the head. Take an inhale and, on the exhale, use the top arm to push up to seated. Come to kneel on the knees and sit back onto the heels. Bringing the knees comfortably wide, fold over the legs and rest your forehead on the floor. Either place the hands back by the feet or stack them under the forehead as a little pillow. Deeply inflate the lower belly against the upper thighs with each breath in Balasana, and remain here for 5-10 full breaths. On the last inhale take your hands to the floor beneath your shoulders and, on your exhale, press up.

THE CLEANSE has compiled 10 of the most common culprits of healthy foods that actually aren’t healthy!!!!…. they may surprise you.
orange-juice-brands1.Orange juice (store bought): Unfortunately processed orange juice really is a prime example of advertising jargon literally fooling us!
It is full of sugars and additives.
Store bought orange juice contains very few minerals and vitamins as it is often made from concentrate and heated. This process removes all the nutrients from the juice!
Better alternative: Fresh squeezed orange juice or eat the orange itself!🍊
2.Soy and tofu:
Soy is one of the most modified crops (it contains high amount of GMOS)
Unfermented soy (like tofu) contain xeno and phytoestrogens that can cause hormonal havoc!
This is a big problem. Soy contains plant estrogens in the form of isoflavones which effectively raise your estrogen levels and therefore lowers your testosterone levels. Those hormones are in competition so more of one means less of the other.
Messing up your estrogen levels has devastating effects for men and women as well as children and newborns.
Men
Improper balance of testosterone to estrogen in men can lead to a lower libido, fat accumulation around the waist and loss of energy, stamina and virility and even man boobs (gynecomastia).
Women
Having abnormally high levels of estrogen doesn’t mean you’ll be more of a woman. It could disrupt your periods, fertility and put you at risk for breast cancer.

popcorn4. Microwave popcorn:I know it’s hard to say no to that buttery goodness but it turns out microwaved popcorn is really bad for us!!!
The bag almost all microwave popcorn varieties come in is lined with perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). This chemical is the same toxic stuff found in teflon pots and pans. It can stay in the environment and in the human body for long periods of time. This chemical when heated has been linked to infertility, cancer and other diseases in lab animals. No long term studies have been conducted on humans, but the EPA lists this substance as a carcinogen.
Now, the popcorn itself, even though natural flavors and artificial flavors are listed on the ingredient label of microwave popcorn, we have no way of knowing what’s actually in these ingredients. Food manufacturers won’t tell you and they hide things in there like MSG, beaver’s anal glands and diacetyl butter flavoring. What’s so wrong with a little bit of artificial butter flavoring? Well a lot. This stuff is seriously toxic, which forced Conagra Foods to remove it from their Act branded Microwave popcorn recently because it causes lung issues in workers. This ingredient is also linked to brain issues which cause Alzheimer’s Disease too.
Better alternative:  Make your own!!!

Where to start?? Energy drinks have a list of potential and lethal dangers lets start with the big one…..
Cardiac Arrest:  Those with underlying heart conditions have gone into cardiac arrest after just a few energy drinks. Before drinking energy drinks or caffeine, be sure to know your heart’s health.-A new study showed that energy drinks cause more forceful heart contractions, which could be harmful to some with certain heart conditions.- One study showed that between 2009 and 2011 there were 4854 calls to poison control centers regarding energy drinks. 51% of these calls were involving children.
Headaches and Migraines: Too many energy drinks can lead to severe headaches from the caffeine withdrawal symptoms. Changing the amount of caffeine you ingest daily can cause more frequent headaches.
Increased Anxiety: Those with 2 different genetic variations in their adenosine receptors are prone to feeling increased anxiety when consuming caffeinated beverages such as energy drinks. Larger doses of caffeine can even spur on full blown panic attacks.
Insomnia: Energy drinks do a good job of keeping people awake, but when abused, they can cause some people to miss sleep altogether. This lack of sleep causes impaired functioning and can be dangerous to drive or perform other concentration heavy tasks.
Type 2 Diabetes: Because many energy drinks are also very high in sugar, they can eventually wear out the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas, which leads to type 2 diabetes.
Drug Interaction: Some of the ingredients in energy drinks can interact with prescription medications especially medications taken for depression.
Addiction: People can become addicted to caffeine and energy drinks. This can lead to lack of functioning when unable to have the energy drink.
All energy drinks obviously contain loads of sugar and other not so healthy additives (like food colouring)
Can also contain sugar alcohols which have been linked to cancer
Better alternative: Try substituting an Espresso, green drink, Yerba mate or green tea powder!
6. Diet soda
When taken at face value, diet soda seems like a health-conscious choice. It saves you the 140-plus calories you’d find in a sugary soft drink while still satisfying your urge for something sweet with artificial sweeteners like aspartame, saccharin, and sucralose. But there’s more to this chemical cocktail than meets the eye. Artificial sweeteners have more intense flavor than real sugar, so over time products like diet soda dull our senses to naturally sweet foods like fruit. Even more troubling, these sugar stand-ins have been shown to have the same effect on your body as sugar. “Artificial sweeteners trigger insulin, which sends your body into fat storage mode and leads to weight gain,”
Diet sodas often contain aspartame, food coloring and other dangerous additives
Better alternative: Kombucha or a cold pressed juice!
Low-fat muffinsThese contain more calories than donuts!
“Low-fat” foods are loaded with sugar and other additive to make up for a lack of taste
Better alternative: Reach for some sliced apple and nut butter as a midday

 7. Whole wheat breadNo bread is the goal!
It has been known for a long time that white bread and refined grains in general aren’t particularly nutritious.Nutritionists and dietitians all around the world have encouraged us to eat whole grains instead.But grains, especially gluten grains like wheat, have been under intense scrutiny in recent years. Even whole grain bread usually isn’t made with actual “whole” grains. They are grains that have been pulverized into very fine flour. Even though this process reserves the nutrients, it causes these products to be digested rapidly. The starches in bread get broken down quickly in the digestive tract and enter the bloodstream as glucose. This causes a rapid spike in blood sugar and insulin levels. Even whole wheat bread spikes blood sugar faster than many candy bars. When blood sugar goes up rapidly, it tends to go down just as quickly. When blood sugar goes down, we become hungry. This is the blood sugar roller coaster that is familiar to people on high carb diets. Soon after eating, they become hungry again, which calls for another high-carb snack. Elevated blood sugars can also cause glycation at the cellular level when the blood sugars react with proteins in the body. This is one of the components of ageing.Studies on carb restricted diets (which eliminate/reduce starches and sugars) suggest that individuals who are diabetic or need to lose weight should avoid all grains. Many respected health professionals now claim that bread and other sources of gluten grains are unnecessary at best and potentially harmful.
Most bread on the market contains refined wheat (and gluten)which can cause a leaky gut, inflammation, and other digestive issues!
Better alternative: Ezekiel bread or Sprouted Spelt bread🍞
Fruit drinksBasically, these are sugar water! Fruit drink offer NO nutrition value!
Better Alternative: Infused water! Try adding fresh cucumbers, mint and lemon for a tastier water.
8. Gluten free/ sugar-free/ fat-free branded food:Stir away from diet/ sugar-free/ fat-free foods! They are often the unhealthiest foods out there
Labels do not mean anything! They are just a very good marketing strategy.
Read your ingredients! These products often have lots of sugar, additives, preservatives and chemicals to make up for taste which leads to digestive and other health ailments.
9.Tuna
Over farmed and contains high amounts of mercury which can lead to mercury poisoning
Better Alternative: Limit to light Light flaked tuna (smaller the fish the less mercury – made from meat, not mulch)
10.Reduced fat Peanut Butter
Filled with crap (chemicals/ other additives) 2 teaspoons of peanut butter come in at a whopping 190 calories!!!!!
Natural (sugar and salt-free) is always better
Better alternative: Try Natural peanut butter, almond butter or try sunflower seed butterMargarineMade from refined vegetable oils like canola oil

Our first tip is an oldie but a goldie….You should be getting NINE servings of fruits and vegetables daily. Fresh produce is packed with vitamins A, C and E, phytochemicals, minerals, carbs and fiber, produce is healthy, filling, and naturally low in calories and fat. Enjoy eating fresh produce it at meals, snacks and before/after exercise to stay full, feel energized and lose weight. Vegetables and fruits are an important part of a healthy diet, and variety is as important as quantity. No single fruit or vegetable provides all of the nutrients you need to be healthy. Eat plenty everyday.

A diet rich in vegetables and fruits can lower blood pressure, reduce risk of heart disease and stroke, prevent some types of cancer, lower risk of eye and digestive problems, and have a positive effect upon blood sugar which can help keep appetite in check. Eat a variety of types and colors of produce in order to give your body the mix of nutrients it needs. Try dark leafy greens; brightly colored red, yellow and orange vegetables and fruits; and cooked tomatoes.

Eat more vegetables and fruits each day

1. Keep fruit where you can see it. That way you’ll be more likely to eat it.

2. Explore the produce aisle and choose something new. Variety is the key to a healthy diet.

Detox Water.

I drink this for a week before a big event to help me flush my body of toxins and to debloat. I drink at least eight 8 oz cups or more depending on my activity level. Not only does this taste good…it works.

Here’s the recipe for the Natural  Detox Water: (for one 24 oz serving) –

3-5 slices of fresh cucumber

– 1/2 small lemon sliced
– 1/4 of orange sliced
– a few fresh mint leaves
– 24 oz of ice cold water

Why does this work?

*Cucumbers prevent water retention and also have many anti-inflammatory properties. *Lemon provides the cleansing effect of citric acid to help clear out the digestive syste *Oranges contain flavonoids in the peel and juice that stimulate the immune system and protects against a fungi/pests while helping to reduce cholesterol levels *Mint helps the body digest more easily and it also soothes any stomach cramps you may have. Keep in mind that the more you refill your jug, glass or bottle with the same fruits, the more diluted and less nutrient-dense the fruit becomes. So I would recommend that after 2 or 3 refills, dump it and replace with fresh cuts to make sure you get all the vitamins and minerals you need. I also wouldn’t leave the fruits in there for more than 24 hrs before changing it.

Better alternative: Use Avocado oil or coconut oil for high heat cooking, and olive oil for low-temperature cooking
popcorn4. Microwave popcorn:I know it’s hard to say no to that buttery goodness but it turns out microwaved popcorn is really bad for us!!!
The bag almost all microwave popcorn varieties come in is lined with perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). This chemical is the same toxic stuff found in teflon pots and pans. It can stay in the environment and in the human body for long periods of time. This chemical when heated has been linked to infertility, cancer and other diseases in lab animals. No long term studies have been conducted on humans, but the EPA lists this substance as a carcinogen.
Now, the popcorn itself, even though natural flavors and artificial flavors are listed on the ingredient label of microwave popcorn, we have no way of knowing what’s actually in these ingredients. Food manufacturers won’t tell you and they hide things in there like MSG, beaver’s anal glands and diacetyl butter flavoring. What’s so wrong with a little bit of artificial butter flavoring? Well a lot. This stuff is seriously toxic, which forced Conagra Foods to remove it from their Act branded Microwave popcorn recently because it causes lung issues in workers. This ingredient is also linked to brain issues which cause Alzheimer’s Disease too.
Better alternative:  Make your own!!!

Where to start?? Energy drinks have a list of potential and lethal dangers lets start with the big one…..
Cardiac Arrest:  Those with underlying heart conditions have gone into cardiac arrest after just a few energy drinks. Before drinking energy drinks or caffeine, be sure to know your heart’s health.-A new study showed that energy drinks cause more forceful heart contractions, which could be harmful to some with certain heart conditions.- One study showed that between 2009 and 2011 there were 4854 calls to poison control centers regarding energy drinks. 51% of these calls were involving children.
Headaches and Migraines: Too many energy drinks can lead to severe headaches from the caffeine withdrawal symptoms. Changing the amount of caffeine you ingest daily can cause more frequent headaches.
Increased Anxiety: Those with 2 different genetic variations in their adenosine receptors are prone to feeling increased anxiety when consuming caffeinated beverages such as energy drinks. Larger doses of caffeine can even spur on full blown panic attacks.
Insomnia: Energy drinks do a good job of keeping people awake, but when abused, they can cause some people to miss sleep altogether. This lack of sleep causes impaired functioning and can be dangerous to drive or perform other concentration heavy tasks.
Type 2 Diabetes: Because many energy drinks are also very high in sugar, they can eventually wear out the insulin-producing cells of the pancreas, which leads to type 2 diabetes.
Drug Interaction: Some of the ingredients in energy drinks can interact with prescription medications especially medications taken for depression.
Addiction: People can become addicted to caffeine and energy drinks. This can lead to lack of functioning when unable to have the energy drink.
All energy drinks obviously contain loads of sugar and other not so healthy additives (like food colouring)
Can also contain sugar alcohols which have been linked to cancer
Better alternative: Try substituting an Espresso, green drink, Yerba mate or green tea powder!
6. Diet soda
When taken at face value, diet soda seems like a health-conscious choice. It saves you the 140-plus calories you’d find in a sugary soft drink while still satisfying your urge for something sweet with artificial sweeteners like aspartame, saccharin, and sucralose. But there’s more to this chemical cocktail than meets the eye. Artificial sweeteners have more intense flavor than real sugar, so over time products like diet soda dull our senses to naturally sweet foods like fruit. Even more troubling, these sugar stand-ins have been shown to have the same effect on your body as sugar. “Artificial sweeteners trigger insulin, which sends your body into fat storage mode and leads to weight gain,”
Diet sodas often contain aspartame, food coloring and other dangerous additives
Better alternative: Kombucha or a cold pressed juice!
Low-fat muffinsThese contain more calories than donuts!
“Low-fat” foods are loaded with sugar and other additive to make up for a lack of taste

 7. Whole wheat breadNo bread is the goal!
It has been known for a long time that white bread and refined grains in general aren’t particularly nutritious.Nutritionists and dietitians all around the world have encouraged us to eat whole grains instead.But grains, especially gluten grains like wheat, have been under intense scrutiny in recent years. Even whole grain bread usually isn’t made with actual “whole” grains. They are grains that have been pulverized into very fine flour. Even though this process reserves the nutrients, it causes these products to be digested rapidly. The starches in bread get broken down quickly in the digestive tract and enter the bloodstream as glucose. This causes a rapid spike in blood sugar and insulin levels. Even whole wheat bread spikes blood sugar faster than many candy bars. When blood sugar goes up rapidly, it tends to go down just as quickly. When blood sugar goes down, we become hungry. This is the blood sugar roller coaster that is familiar to people on high carb diets. Soon after eating, they become hungry again, which calls for another high-carb snack. Elevated blood sugars can also cause glycation at the cellular level when the blood sugars react with proteins in the body. This is one of the components of ageing.Studies on carb restricted diets (which eliminate/reduce starches and sugars) suggest that individuals who are diabetic or need to lose weight should avoid all grains. Many respected health professionals now claim that bread and other sources of gluten grains are unnecessary at best and potentially harmful.
Most bread on the market contains refined wheat (and gluten)which can cause a leaky gut, inflammation, and other digestive issues!
Better alternative: Ezekiel bread or Sprouted Spelt bread🍞
Fruit drinksBasically, these are sugar water! Fruit drink offer NO nutrition value!
Better Alternative: Infused water! Try adding fresh cucumbers, mint and lemon for a tastier water.
8. Gluten free/ sugar-free/ fat-free branded food:Stir away from diet/ sugar-free/ fat-free foods! They are often the unhealthiest foods out there
Labels do not mean anything! They are just a very good marketing strategy.
Read your ingredients! These products often have lots of sugar, additives, preservatives and chemicals to make up for taste which leads to digestive and other health ailments.
9.Tuna
Over farmed and contains high amounts of mercury which can lead to mercury poisoning
Better Alternative: Limit to light Light flaked tuna (smaller the fish the less mercury – made from meat, not mulch)
10.Reduced fat Peanut Butter
Filled with crap (chemicals/ other additives) 2 teaspoons of peanut butter come in at a whopping 190 calories!!!!!
Natural (sugar and salt-free) is always better
Better alternative: Try Natural peanut butter, almond butter or try sunflower seed butterMargarineMade from refined vegetable oils like canola oil

Hippocrates said this more than 2,000 years ago, but we’re only now coming to understand just how right he was. Research over the past two decades has revealed that gut health is critical to overall health, and that an unhealthy gut contributes to a wide range of diseases including diabetes, obesity, rheumatoid arthritis, autism spectrum disorder, depression and chronic fatigue syndrome.

In fact, many researchers believe that supporting intestinal health and restoring the integrity of the gut barrier will be one of the most important goals of medicine in the 21st century.

We tend to take our gut for granted, and it costs us dearly. We continually eat wrong foods that are rarely digested properly. The by-products of incomplete digestion clog the gut with accumulated debris. This coating becomes a perfect breeding ground for dangerous forms of bacteria and other microorganisms.

What is worthwhile for anyone to consider, however, is how you can improve your crucially important digestive system and the overall health of your gut. It doesn’t have to be fancy or all-consuming, nor does it require you to fork out money for supplements promising you this or that.

Here is a list of practical and simple ways that anyone can improve their gut health:

DRINK LESS WITH MEALS.

When you drink a lot during a meal, it dilutes the levels of hydrchloric acid in your stomach. Without sufficient HCL, digestion can not proceed quickly or smoothly. Try to have your drinks at least 30 minutes before, or 30-60 minutes after you eat.

Additionally, beverages that are room temperature are easier on the digestive system than really cool drinks, so skip the ice if you can (and knowing this, I still drink cold smoothies, but I do try to have most of my other beverages sans ice).

HAVE FERMENTED FOODS WITH OR JUST BEFORE YOUR MEALS.

As a rich source of enzymes, naturally fermented foods help to break down what we eat, in addition to boosting the good bacteria count in our bodies. A few examples are kefir or yogurt, kombucha, sour cream or creme fraiche, fermented veggies (lacto-fermented pickles or salsa, sauerkraut) and any other food that is naturally lacto-fermented or made using live bacterial cultures.
Try adding just one or two fermented and/or cultured foods to your family’s repertoire.

ADD HOMEMADE BONE BROTHS TO YOUR DIET AND TRY TO INCLUDE THEM IN MEALS AS OFTEN AS YOU CAN.

Use them in soups and stews, in gravies, in pasta sauces, in casseroles and pot pies, or even drink them by the mug with or in between your meals. Truly healing and soothing to the gut, bone broths are a frugal homemakers best friend on the road to better health. Broths are cheap and easy to make, and when made correctly, are powerhouses of gut-healing gelatin and other nourishing nutrients.

TAKE PROBIOTICS.

Here at The Cleanse we don’t recommend too many supplements, because we prefer to get our nutrition from whole foods. However, there are two that we regularly recommend and they are cod liver oil and a good quality probiotic. You might have heard of acidophilus, which is just one of the many beneficial bacteria strains that we want to populate our gut.  After every session of colonic hydrotherapy we offer a complimentary pro-biotoic to help replenish the good bacteria.

Probiotics, have been found to help restore and provide healthy bacteria to the digestive tract that may help to promote healthier digestion- and for many, reduced stomach discomfort.

For many reasons due to our diet, chlorinated water, antibiotic use and more, we need to be proactive about repopulating our gut with these friendly little bacteria, who do so much more in our bodies than we really give them credit for.

Probiotics are live bacteria and yeasts promoted as having various health benefits. They’re usually added to yoghurts or taken as food supplements, and are often described as ‘good’ or ‘friendly’ bacteria.

Probiotics are thought to help restore the natural balance of bacteria in your gut (including your stomach and intestines) when it has been disrupted by an illness or treatment.

Key Tip: When looking for a probiotic, search for a variety that has 5+ different varieties of bacteria. Alternatively, Kefir and yogurts also contain a healthy amount of probiotics.Cut Back on Raw Cruciferous Vegetables

Raw vegetables, particularly cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, kale, cabbage, brussels sprouts although healthful, can cause major stomach discomfort for many people. BUT cruciferous vegetables that are raw do provide many nutrients and potential health benefits so instead of cutting them out completely, try to cut back in amount (for example if you usually eat 1 cup, try 1/2 cup) per serving and try cooking before eating. When cooked, cruciferous vegetables may be slightly more tolerable, but there are also plenty of other healthful vegetables that can be swapped.

Key Tip: Swap in spinach, arugula, romaine and other greens for kale, cabbage, and other cruciferous vegetables on occasion; overall, varying vegetables can also help to provide an abundance of nutrients.

Eat Consistently
No this doesn’t mean just pig out all day long but proper frequent eating is one of the most important aspects of not only weight loss, but regularity and preventing/improving acid reflux. When it comes to acid reflux specifically, one of the major contributors is having an empty stomach, so when Rebooters start having healthy meals and juices every 2-3 hours, many notice that symptoms subside.

Key Tip:: Make an eating schedule for times that you will be aiming to have breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks; if you have trouble remembering to eat, try setting a phone alarm to remind yourself.

Cut Back on Acidic Foods

Acidic foods can be hard on the stomach, particularly when it’s empty (and also for anyone with heartburn). If you want to include citrus containing foods make sure to have something along with your food or juice containing acidic ingredients. If you don’t have acid reflux problems or tummy troubles, then drinking warm lemon water in the morning is a habit you should keep!

Key Tip: Eat up before drinking and chowing down on citrus-containing foods and teas; if you’re looking to swap out citrus from a juice try subbing for ginger instead.lemon in waterCitrus-containing foods, like lemons and oranges contain flavanoids, and have been shown to be potentially stomach-cancer preventive, so if you don’t have acid reflux or trouble with acidic foods, you can include them more frequently for anti-cancer benefits. (Hint: the flavanoid is found in the peel, so add some zest to your meal or leave the peel on when juicing.)

Key Tip: If you identify food (or foods) that may be causing gastrointestinal distress, try removing them for three days and see if symptoms improve.

Load up on White Vegetables
Load up on white, allium vegetables including garlic, leeks and scallions that contain a powerful antioxidant compound called allicin that may help to prevent stomach cancer. When it comes to garlic, you must prepare the garlic then let it sit for 10 minutes before using to ensure that you reap the entirety of the benefits.

Key Tip: Cook with garlic, leeks and scallions (following the tip above for garlic) add to soups, salad dressings, and cooked entrees.

 Eat More Orange Vegetables

Orange vegetables like carrots and sweet potatoes contain powerful anti-cancer nutrients including powerful antioxidant vitamin C and beta-carotene that may help to prevent cell damage; sweet potatoes also contain potentially anti-cancer caffeic acid that may help to prevent blood supply from reaching tumors.

Key Tip: Add more orange vegetables to juices, salads, entrees and other meals. Try this Trick or Treat Juice!

Cut Back on Overly Salted & Cured Foods

Nitrates (preservatives) found in cured meats and foods have been found to raise risk for stomach cancer as well as overly salted foods. They are actually listed as one of the top five foods you should never eat.

Key Tip: Search for nitrate-free meats and processed foods (although you should always aim to eat as few processed foods as possible!).
