At this time of year we often rush around , stressed and eating whatever is to hand as we are so busy. Also, in the coming weeks we seem to continuously be offered many foods we wouldn’t eat all year – Quality Street on tap and lots of mince pies!!!!

With this in mind, THE CLEANSE offers some healthy food swaps that will help you make the right choices to treat yourself this Christmas without loading up on fattening and high-calorie dishes that result in unwanted weight gain.

white-wine-spritzer-recipe-lemonChristmas cheer comes with binge drinking and all the empty calories of alcohol. Try to choose low-calorie beverages instead.
If you must drink, then instead of having a glass of white wine, mix half wine and half carbonated water to save over 50 calories.

jumbo-shrimpEat shrimp instead of fried appetizers
There’s no need to give up on appetisers while you’re mingling at a party. Save over 100 calories by choosing three jumbo shrimp with some sauce instead of fried snacks. Shrimp also has a low saturated fat content.

Make a healthier choice by choosing dark chocolateDon’t be tempted by gourmet chocolate and candy, and satisfy your sweet tooth with some dark chocolate instead. It has a lower calorie and fat content. Dark chocolate also contains flavonoids that have heart-healthy benefits.

Munch on popcorn
If you’re hosting a party and want to choose a light snack for your guests to munch on, try popcorn instead of salted mixed nuts. This will help save over 500 calories and 25 grams of carbohydrates per cup!

Keep your Christmas cocoa drink simple
Instead of selecting a speciality drink that contains whipped cream, sugar or ice-cream in a coffee shop, opt for a hot chocolate with fat-free milk. You’ll save about 150-200 calories by making this simple switch.

Lighten up the potatoes
Baked potatoes are a good source of Vitamin C and fibre, but the added cheese, cream, and butter cancels out its health benefits. One medium stuffed potato contains about 300 calories and 9 grams of saturated fat.
Use low-fat dairy products or add low-calorie vegetables like onions and spinach to create a lighter version of stuffed potatoes. Roasted sweet potatoes are also a great alternative and contain only half of the calories.

turkeySkip red meat, eat white turkey meat
This ones a no brainer for this time of year!!!Turkey is a good source of protein. A turkey breast packs more flavour than chicken, and is also relatively lower in fat. A serving of turkey breast without the skin is only about 160 calories, with most pieces containing only 1 to 4 grams of fat.

Choose salsa and yoghurt dips over full-fat dipssalsa
Appetisers need dips, but you will consume too many calories from dips made with full-fat cream or cheese. Substitute full-fat cream with low-fat or non-fat yogurt. Choose fresh salsa over fattening dips. You will save 125 calories per 1/2 cup.

Make a healthier choice by choosing dark chocolate
Don’t be tempted by gourmet chocolate and candy, and satisfy your sweet tooth with some dark chocolate instead. It has a lower calorie and fat content. Dark chocolate also contains flavonoids that have heart-healthy benefits.

Cheesecake is always a crowd favourite during the holidays. The problem is that one large slice of cheesecake has about 300-500 calories and 20-30 grams of fat. This is without accounting for the calories from assorted flavours and toppings. A regular slice of cheesecake is loaded with cream cheese, sour cream, whole milk, sugar, and heavy whipping cream.

cheescake Check out lighter versions of cheesecake recipes and garnish it with fresh fruits instead.

Most of all though, Christmas is a time for family, friends and fun, so make sure you are kind to yourself and ENJOY!
